Bad Religion quote #21

No Bad Religion song can make your life complete.

From the song “No Direction” on Generator.

I had this lyric in my head a few days ago. By the lyric alone, I kind of see it as it is. Basically no Bad Religion song (or any other song), can complete your life. You have to do that on our own. Find our own way and meaning in life.

In terms of the entire song, it is similar, in that you (and myself) should be yourself. Do not look to the television or media outlets and copy people. Make up your own mind.

Verse two goes as follows:

Now a confused schoolgirl stares at the TV tray
The stresses of maturing compound every day
She glances up to see her favorite video
And gets ideas from Madonna’s nasty clothes
In need of affection, she craves a direction
Her heroes offer her

Nowadays Lada Gaga may very well come to mind, or numerous other media celebrities.

The same applies politically, as verse one somewhat relates:

A sullen figure walks along a dusty road,
His life was holy and he couldn’t bear the load.
He left his people and a simple life behind,
He raised his torso and looked into the sky,
Shouting his questions, looking for directions.
“What do I do now?”

Too many people are following Glenn Beck’s (et. al) words. They need to find information on their own, and make up their own minds. The same applies to the other side of the political sphere. Think Lincoln’s team of rivals (stolen from the book of the same name).

Bonus quote:

I don’t believe in self important folks who preach

In context:

A righteous student came and asked me to reflect
He judged my lifestyle was politically incorrect
I don’t believe in self important folks who preach

Full lyrics:

A sullen figure walks along a dusty road
His life was holy and he couldn’t bear the Load
He left his people and simple life behind
He raised his torso and he looked into the sky
Shouting his questions, looking for directions
What do I do now?

Now a confused schoolgirl stares at the TV tray
The stresses of maturing compound every day
She glances up to see her favorite video
And gets ideas from Madonna’s nasty clothes
In need of affection, she craves a direction
Her heroes offer her

Everyone’s looking for something
And they assume somebody else knows what it is
No one can live without the decisions of their own
It seems so they look to someone else
To tell them what to be, tell ’em what to wear
Tell ’em what to say, tell ’em how to act and think
And compel others compulsively
Until the world is all like them

A righteous student came and asked me to reflect
He judged my lifestyle was politically incorrect
I don’t believe in self important folks who preach
No Bad Religion song can make your life complete
Prepare for rejection
You’ll get no direction from me
You’ll get no direction from me
You’ll get no direction from me

  1. Andrew,
I enjoyed this blog entry on Bad Religion. It actually reminds me of a lyric idea I had more than a year ago. The lyric is still only a title, but I have been a lot more musically productive lately; so let’s say, it’s in my sights. I look forward to seeing more entries soon.
