Although the album has been out just shy of a year, and I have only listened to it a handful of times, not really enough to write a review, I wanted to get this out. Hopefully I will get more in-depth in the future if the album has staying power with me…
The album as a whole is quite good, but the standout tracks (to me so far), really standout!
“Know Me”, the second track on the album is tied for my favourite. It is really the first proper track, as the first track, the title track is more of an intro even if it is three and a half minutes. “Know Me” has a cool beat driving the track, and Frankie’s vocals are quite soothing to start. When the chorus/hook rolls around it picks up, and it very catchy. The slower bits almost have a The Cure feel to them. Check it out:
The other track tied for my favourite is “Night Swim” (cool still used for the video):
Another beat driven track, but with bass guitar and real guitar playing important roles. Guitar especially, as it kind of has a surf guitar thing going.
As a whole, the album has a lot of real instrumentation prominent in the mix (“Gospel/Grace”, which is nice, but of course there is drum programming and synth too (“Daylight Sky”). Plus I dig her vocals/vocal style and how it fits in the music (“Pair of Wings” for instance). I have yet to hear her debut, Frankie Rose and the Outs, but plan on doing so soon!
Definitely worth a listen. Check it out on Rdio.
Potentially NSFW (not safe for work) picture after the jump (no idea as to the source of the pic, there is another exactly the same out there with way more colour, but I assume the less coloured one is more true to real life):
