#SoundCloudSunday – Arbutus Records

Arbutus Records is a Montreal label founded by Sebastian Cowan in 2009 and its roster is bands that are all friends and helped establish the label in the loft space it was founded.

I don’t know too much of their music, but I know many of the artists by name at least (it is a start!).

Presently the label is promoting Raphaelle from Braids’ side project, Blue Hawaii and their second album, Untogether. It was recorded when band members Raphaelle Standell-Preston and Alex “Agor” Cowan were apart from each other. Check out “In Two”:

Recently I have been listening to TOPS. Check out their set from SoundCloud (“She’s So Bad” has a chord progression that reminds me of an 80s tune, but I will try and figure it out later… it is at 0:35 and a few other times if you feel like checking it out yourself):

Of course Grimes is still a part of the label. Here is “Rosa”, from her 2009 debut, Geidi Primes:

  1. Blue Hawaii is getting airplay on Amazing Radio (actually internet only @ amazingradio.co.uk at the moment) over here. Really good stuff. I saw Braids live at Latitude Festival a few years back and the band was excellent live. I must see if I took any half-useful photos of their set.
    Keep up the good work!
