Palmetto Playground, a triangular park adjacent to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in Brooklyn Heights, was renamed Friday for Adam Yauch, the late Beastie Boys member and Brooklyn native who spent time there as child.
Saturday marks one year since Yauch, a socially conscious and widely beloved rapper known by his stage name MCA, died after battling throat cancer.
The event in his honor was held on a sprightly day and attended by a sizable crowd of neighborhood residents and fans.
Horovitz, clad in sunglasses, paid tribute to his former bandmate and said a playground was a fitting spot to name for Yauch. “Like the Wu Tang clan,” he said, referring to the rap group that hailed from Staten Island, “Beastie Boys is for the children!”
